The Law Of Attraction and The Secret – BS Or Success?

Friday, August 29th, 2008

Have you ever heard of the “Law of Attraction”? Or “The Secret”?

For years I heard about this on some self development forums that I hang out on. But with a bizarre name like this, I took no interest in it at all.

Then by accident I decided to look into it further. I figured out that it is a huge field of self development with many followers.

So What Exactly Is It?

It is all based on one book. I’ve attached a free download for you below.

Download link: Think and Grow Rich

Think And Grow Rich

Think And Grow Rich is a book that was written in 1937 by a man named Napoleon Hill. This chap was an associate of Andrew Carnegie, the famous American Industrialist who suggested that he write the book.

Remember that all this was in the midst of The Great Depression, the worst economic slump that the world has ever seen.

By the way, because this book is now so old, it is in the public domain and anyone can read it for free. Supposedly it is one of the best selling books of all time.

So What’s It About? Why The Huge Following?

It reads as some kind of story of how to become successful based on the experiences of other great industrialists. At first, while I was reading this I thought to myself how great a read this was going to be. To learn from the experiences of some of the richest men in American business history is surely priceless!

But lazy as I am, I decided to investigate the book on the internet.

It turns out that there is no real scientific basis in this book. What Hill talks about is a “secret” that you are supposed to “get” while reading this book, but without him actually telling you!

I thought this sounded ridiculous so I was determined to cheat and get the answer to the “secret” from someone else!

In fact, I found that some entrepreneurial people have even written books to tell you what this supposed secret is! Luckily, there are still plenty of people telling you for free.

What Is The Secret?

- Have a burning desire for your goal
- Sometimes you must take action based on faith
- Be thankful for what you have
- Visualise your success and it will happen
- and more…

At least, these are people’s interpretations of what “the secret” is.

Now if you look at the above, then a lot of it makes sense. Visualisation is used by many successful people such as entrepreneurs and sportsmen, gratitude is always good, a burning desire can help you overcome inevitable hurdles…but faith?

I find this last point difficult to grasp. There is no scientific basis for it. I am non-religious and I find it difficult to do anything that is based on faith. This will become clearly shortly when I tell you about “The Secret”.

The Secret – The Book

This is a book that was featured heavily on Oprah, gained a lot of notoriety and became a bestseller.

I haven’t read the book but I have seen the DVD.

Let me first tell you that this product and all others out there are just a rip off of the free original, Think and Grow Rich.

The DVD is easy to watch, it is basically a motivational DVD, a series of interviews with many people who claim that “The Secret” has changed their lives.

I have to admit to liking this DVD – real people telling you about their experiences can hit home. Here are some of their tips which you’ll notice are similar to the original book:

- Be thankful
- Visualise your success
- Will it and it will happen

This last point I had a lot of trouble fathoming. Most of this DVD was about having a positive attitude and a great desire for success. But the last point seemed to be the most important one and yet the most incredulous.

You are supposed to wish for success and have faith. And then they try to convince you that the universe will realign and make it happen! Obviously, there is not a shred of scientific evidence to support this theory! Even though many people on the DVD swore blind by it.

Amazing Stories

There were a couple of amazing stories on there.

For instance, one guy was in a car crash and almost totally paralyzed. But he blinked out a message and claimed that he would walk out of the hospital by Christmas. Incredibly he did!! An amazing story!

But there was also a lady who said that she had contracted cancer. But several months later, the cancer had disappeared – without any other assistance! Now as amazing as this story was, I have to say that I was a little disconcerted and the thought of someone denying themselves cancer treatment such as chemo and radiotherapy and putting all their efforts into “The Secret”, and “wishing” themselves to get better. How do we know that this woman was not just lucky and there are thousands of people who have done the same and failed? Personally, I would like to know more about these cases, from a scientific point of view.

The Law Of Attraction

All of these themes above are what followers call “The Law Of Attraction”. The tenets that originated from the book, “Think and Grow Rich”, and have been ripped off by hundreds of book writers and DVD makers since are the same:

If you wish for something and believe in it then the universe will realign itself to make it happen for you. Through your attitude, you will effectively “attract” success.

As you can see, the fundamentals of this require a belief that desire will be rewarded. There is no scientific basis for it!

According to followers, what we may see as a coincidence or good luck, they put down to “The Law Of Attraction”! And, naturally, if you don’t get success then they say “you aren’t doing it properly”!!

Who is right? Technically, nobody is right or wrong, whether you are a supporter or a disbeliever. It cannot be proven either way. But myself coming from a scientific background, this faith based belief is akin to a religion and I have great difficulty believing in something that there is no evidence for, despite any mental benefits that it may bring.

Your Thoughts

So what do you think of all this? Fact or fiction? Has it helped you? Can you really say that it works, that the universe changes? How do you justify your blind faith in this? How do you know it was not just good luck or coincidence? I’d love to hear from you, whatever your thoughts, please leave a comment below!

The Incredible Power Of Hypnosis For Self Improvement

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

Whe most people think of hypnosis, they think of stage hypnotists like Paul McKenna or TV shows like those by Derren Brown. But did you know that hypnosis can also be used as a powerful force for self improvement?

What Is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is when a person is put into a trance and given suggestions.

A trance is not the same as being asleep. A trance is a state of relaxation where the mind becomes incredible receptive.

During this trance, the hypnotist can give the subject a series of suggestions and then awakens them. These suggestions can have profound and long lasting effects.

So How Can We Use Hypnosis For Self Improvement?

OK, so we know that hypnosis can be used for amusement or to cure irrational fears (e.g. a fear of flying) but what else?

Let’s start with major problems:

If you are overweight and need to lose fat then hypnosis can help.

It is also said to help with addictions although I personally believe that it has only limited effect in most cases (I’ll save my argument for another time).

Anxiety and anxiety related problems (e.g. premature ejaculation) can be cured with hypnosis.

OK, enough of the problems, how can a regular, “normal” person be helped by hypnosis?

Self confidence – you cannot get enough of this!

Success – Most people do not achieve anywhere near the potential because of their own self-imposed limitations e.g. lack of belief in their potential. Hypnosis can help with this.

Motivation – Similarly, many people lack the motivation to achieve their potential. In this modern day and age, many of us have grown lazy. For instance, watching too much TV (a HUGE topic that I am going to write more about soon!).

How To Get Hypnotised

There are many hypnotists (or “hypnotherapists” as they like to call themselves) so where do you start?

The ideal way is based on recommendation, but how many of your friends have had hypnosis? Failing that you might look further afield by searching on the internet for recommendations.

Ultimately, your best bet is to phone up a few hypnotists in your nearest large city and interrogate them about their methods. Tell them what your expectations are and ask them how they intend to help you. Eventually, you should just go with whoever you have the most confidence in.

An Alternative: Self-Hypnosis

Of course, you can try self-hypnosis, also known as autosuggestion. Of course, you cannot put yourself into a deep trance but you can still use this method to great effect.

You start off by entering a state of deep relaxation. You can even replicate the hypnotist’s reverse count from 10 down to 1 to help you.

Then you start to repeat a series of phrases that you prepared beforehand. Mostly, they are you talking in the present tense about what you want or wish for. These are also called affirmations.

The idea is that by repeating this each day, these phrases become a part of you. What you desire almost becomes a part of you. Your belief is continually reinforced in those statements. Here is a good wikiHow article that goes into greater depth: How to Perform Self Hypnosis.

You don’t even need to follow this process if you don’t want to. For instance, I have several short term goals that are important to me so I created a picture in Microsoft Paint that shows me in amongst all my achieved goals (e.g. wads of cash). By looking at this every day, it has helped me to believe that I can achieve these goals, no matter what the obstacles.

If you’re cringing right now at what you think is a load of BS, all I can say is that I used to think like you but you need to try it for yourself before you knock it. There are many rich and successful people out there who use their own variation of self-hypnosis.

Many people also find that using audio programs can really help them to enter a deep state of relaxation. There is a method called binaural beats, which is a type of brainwave entrainment that uses a series of specific frequencies to safely put the brain into a receptive state.

There are also other general self-hypnosis MP3s that contain narrated affirmations and save you having to make your own.

Final Comment

I hope the above has at least given you food for thought and some pointers for futher investigation. Personally speaking, I’m going to use self hypnosis to help me lose weight and to increase my confidence and I’ll be sharing my results over the next few weeks so please stay tuned!

My Theory On Losing Weight

Tuesday, August 19th, 2008

Let me first start out by saying that I am overweight myself. I am 86kg which is 190 lbs. Part of the reason I write this blog is to show myself as a guinea pig and over the course of time improve myself, I certainly do not profess to being Mr. Universe!!

Everywhere around the world we see rising levels of obesity. People always talk about Americans being fat but it’s happening everywhere else in the world too. In my country, the UK, we are said to have the fastest growing and largest percentage of overweight people after America. And I read an article this morning that said that even France has a growing number of overweight people.

Some thin people just look at fat people and say “hey, eat less!”.

If only it were that simple! You could create a school where all the instructors did was to repeat the mantra “eat less” and people would pay you millions of dollars! Of course it’s not that simple!

Here is my own personal theory on rising amounts of people being overweight and so many looking to lose weight but failing.

Why Are So Many People Becoming Overweight?

Yes, this is obviously a product of a modern western lifestyle. I don’t think that anyone disagrees with that. Even in China, obesity levels are rising fast as their country rapidly grows. Maybe it is more accurate to say that rising levels of obesity are connected to rapidly rising levels of affluence in a country.

Many people think that more people are becoming overweight because we are leading more sedentary lifestyles. Many of us work behind a desk, walk less and do not have as much time for recreation.

The Myth Of The “Sedentary Lifestyle”

Personally, I think that this is confusing the issue. I have many friends who are skinny as a beanpole and do not do regular exercise or would not consider themselves particularly active. I don’t have the figures on me right now but I did once read somewhere that only a minority of people do regular exercise and that is mainly in the younger age groups.

Take for example my friend who is 45 years old. He works long hours and takes over an hour to get back home to see his wife and young child. This guy does not pump iron or run around the countryside in his spare time and many working people of his age are similar. Yet, he is not overweight. Even though he has the excuse of a “sedentary lifestyle”, he is not overweight. Clearly, there is another reason why people are getting overweight.

Excess Food Is An Addiction

I believe that people who are overweight have an addiction to eating too much food. If you’ve ever seen what skinny people eat, it really is not that much. As human beings, we don’t need 3 full plates of food every day to survive.

Overweight people, on the other hand, they eat when they already feel full. They continue to eat even though they know they don’t need it. They are not actually hungry anymore, they are simply gorging themselves. They do it for the pleasure.

Like I said, it’s an addiction to excess food. You can’t be addicted to food generally because we all need to eat it, we’re programmed that way. But look at overweight people, they can’t get enough of eating too much. They even feel irritable if they can’t get that pleasure.

Junk Food Is An Addiction

I also believe that overweight people have an addiction to eating junk food. Junk food has a high glycaemic index and gives a huge spike in blood sugar. This kind of food is almost like a drug to many overweight people. I know, because I’m one of them.

Some days I can eat junk after junk after junk for the entire day. I know it’s bad for me but I keep on doing it anyway. If I don’t, then I’ll get irritable and think of nothing else but the junk.

The food companies have a lot to answer for here. It is quite difficult to actually get fresh food these days. We are bombarded with processed foods that are depleted of vitamins and can contain up to one hundred chemical additives designed to trick our brains and our tastebuds and contributing to the entire problem.

Personally, I feel that the food companies are as responsible for millions of premature deaths every year as the tobacco companies are. Perhaps one day we will see many class action lawsuits but somehow I doubt it.

Parallel With Smoking

This is even more proof that being overweight is the result of an addiction. I used to be a smoker and got through over 25 cigarettes every day. I tried all the usual methods of quitting such as willpower and patches but they didn’t work.

Did you know that the success rate for people quitting smoking for the rest of their lives is only 5%? Many people can quit for a week, less still for a month, but eventually the vast majority start again. This is because they never cure their addiction and they only abstain from it.

I cured it using cognitive behavioural therapy. It was a way of seeing my addiction for what it really was and I am no longer addicted.

I can see a great many parallels with being overweight. The diet industry is so huge because most people who are overweight will go from one diet to the other. They will lose a little weight and then fall of the wagon and go back to being their old selves.

When they force themselves to go on a diet, they will feel irritable, they will feel like they are “missing” their old junk foods, missing being able to gorge themselves on excess food. Doesn’t this sound like a smoker to you? Non-smokers don’t “miss” anything. In the same way, a healthy person of normal weight does not “miss” junk food at all, he has no desire for it!

Therefore, I feel that smoking and being overweight are very, very similar addictions.

How Can The Addiction To Excess/Junk Food Be Overcome?

One method is CBT like I described earlier. When I quit smoking, I used a famous book by Allen Carr. He also wrote a book on losing weight but it did not work for me. Possibly, quitting smoking was his main forte and his second book was not so good, I can only grasp for reasons why it did not happen for me.

Of course, traditional CBT in the therapist-patient session format could work, however I don’t believe for a moment that the medical community understands the true underlying causes of addiction, particularly addiction to excess and junk food.

The third option I think is the best. I intend to find myself a good hypnotherapist and discuss with him my own logic and understanding of food addiction. In this way I believe that the suggestions that the hypnotist uses will have maximum effect.

This would be the ideal situation for me, however if I simply cannot find a good hypnotherapist (remember that many of them may simply insist on a “willpower” method that will fail in the long term) then I may have to resort to self hypnosis. This requires more discipline and perseverence and I would prefer to just pay a hypnotherapist and let him do the work!

Making Money On The Internet – Is It Really Possible?

Wednesday, August 13th, 2008

I remember when I first started to use the internet back in 1994, I heard that you could make money on the internet.

Instantly I thought “SCAM”! After all, just look at all the scam emails and SPAM emails selling me things I didn’t want. Anyone trying to make money on the internet is a scammer, right?

Fast forward 10 years and now I realise how foolish I was and I wish I had gotten into the game earlier.

The simple truth is, there are many, many legitimate ways to make money on the internet.

How? Give Me An Easy Way!

OK, so how can you make money?

One of the easiest ways is to create a blog like this one. Do you see those ads on this site? They are the easiest way to start making money on the internet.

All you need to do is to start a blog on one of your favourite hobbies and write about it every few days. Add some advertisements and you’ll get paid once a month, it’s as simple as that. There are some people making thousands every day using this simple model.

The easiest and totally free way to get started is to go to Blogger.com. These guys are owned by Google so you’ll be able to integrate these “Ads by Google” really easily with one of their widgets.

It literally takes only 2 minutes to set up a blog and get going so what are you waiting for?

Taking It Further

I highly recommend going the above route if you are totally new to making money. So, what do you do afterwards?

Most internet marketers try affiliate marketing next. This is where you refer people to a product that they might need and in return you get a commission. But instead of the lousy 10% commissions that you might get in the real world, you can get commissions of 50% or higher on the internet!

One of the most popular affiliate programs is Clickbank. Many internet marketers use their program because they are US based and pay regularly. They have thousands of products that you can promote.

Take a look for yourself here: Clickbank Marketplace. You can see all the different products that they have from “make money online” to “improve your golf swing” to “how to cure your acne”.

The beauty is that someone else has already made these products, all you have to do is sign up using the link at the top and then go out and promote these.

An Example

OK, let’s say that you love golf. Then the first thing that you can do is to go straight to Blogger and create yourself a free blog.

After creating the blog, make sure to add the “Google Adsense” widget. You should be able to figure it out yourself but if not, here is a tutorial on the Blogger site: How do I put Adsense on my blog (using Layouts)?.

Now add your first post and keep adding them at least once per week. I recommend adding more, maybe every few days. The more posts you have the more traffic you will get from search engines like Google. Remember, traffic = $$$ :)

Next, sign up to Clickbank. You can do that by clicking here or just using the “Sign Up” link at the top of the marketplace you saw earlier. Basically, this will give you a special “unique id”. Remember this for later.

Now, go back to the Marketplace and look for golf products. Just type “golf” into the search box. It comes back with about 50 products!

You can view the sales pages of each product if you want. That doesn’t matter too much because all these products are listed in order from most popular to least popular. Just go with what sells and pick the first 3.

Click on the “create hoplink” next to each product. You’ll be asked to input your unique ID and then click the “create” button. This will give you your special link.

Now just go back to your blog and use your own special link. You can recommend this product to your readers, you can write a short review (give the benefits mentioned in the sales page), you can just casually link hot keywords like “golf swing” etc. The limit is bound only by your imagination!

Traffic – Getting People To Your Site So You Can Make Money

A website is no good if no one is referring traffic.

The easiest way to do it is to put a link to your website in your signature on forums. Free, easy and requires no effort.

The second best way to get traffic is to write articles for “article directories”. These are sites that receive heavy traffic from Google and you can “siphon off” some of this traffic if you write articles. The best article directory out there is EzineArticles. I would stick with this one for now. Simply write a few articles and you can guarantee targetted traffic.

The Results – How Much Can You Make?

There is no reason why you cannot make $50 a day using this method. Think about it, you only need to make one sale per day to get this kind of money.

But remember, money doesn’t grow on trees and you won’t make that from day one. “Content is King” – you need to write regularly on your blog as this will ensure traffic and returning visitors in the long term. You also should do some traffic promotion as mentioned above.

As they say in Field of Dreams – Build It And They Will Come

I hope this helps you in your quest to start making money online. If you have any questions then please leave a comment.

Fast Way To Learn A Language – The Listening Reading Method

Wednesday, August 13th, 2008

How many languages do you speak? Have you always wanted to learn another language? Maybe you have your answer in the listening-reading method.

Learning a new language is more than being able to communicate in another country. After all, a few smittens of English will normally get you very far in most countries of the world.

No, learning a language gives you access to the culture of a country in a way that only the locals can do.

The only problem is that learning a language is a hell of a steep learning curve. Many people throw the towel in early. It seems that you can only learn if you are forced to at school or out of necessity if you are already living in another country. Even then, your progress can be severely limited.

Do you remember that movie, Splash, with Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah? I was always amazed at how Daryl Hannah’s character was able to learn English by watching TV for a day! Can it really be done?

Actually, there is a method called the Listening-Reading Method (L-R method) that some people have used successfully to learn a language within days!

What you need to go is grab yourself a novel in your own language, the target language plus an audio of the novel in the target language.

So, let’s take a real example: I want to learn Dutch so I’ve obtained an English copy of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. I’ve also obtained a text and audio of the Dutch language version: Harry Potter en de Geheime Kamer.

- First read the English language book so that I can internalise the story. This way when I read or listen to the Dutch version, I will immediately recognise some things because I already have a knowledge of the story.

- Second, listen to the Dutch audio and read the Dutch text at the same time. You know how a foreign language just sounds like gibberish at first and whilst you might be able to separate out the syllables, you really have no clue how to separate out the words. This technique will help you to do that and by the end of the novel, people won’t feel like they are talking “too fast” anymore.

- Third, listen to the Dutch audio but read the English text at the same time. Apparently, this is when the majority of the learning happens. It is recommended that you read the text like this 3 times.

- Lastly, translate the Dutch novel into English yourself. By now, you should be able to do this.

You can read the original description of the L-R method here:
Language Learning Forum – Listening-Reading system.

Basically, you need to commit around 3 full days to this technique. Maybe you could try an entire weekend or even take the Monday or Friday off work for best results.

However, you cannot simply do an hour a day of this method. You really do need to commit uninterrupted time to obtain the greatest benefit. However, the advantages in return for your commitment are simply incredible.

They say that to be able to converse easily in a language then you need around 2000 words. With this technique, you should be able to get close to that figure within 3 days. Quite remarkable isn’t it?

Welcome

Welcome To Grow You.

I started this blog because in the past few months, I’ve become aware of the self improvement niche: a large sub-culture of people who strive to constantly improve themselves in all areas such as:

  • wealth
  • learning languages
  • picking up women
  • spirituality
  • health
  • success
  • and much more…

Of course, you’ve gotta have fun too so I’ll also be posting various funnies on here.

Stick around and I hope you enjoy hanging out.
